Environmental Sustainability and Youth Engagement

Updated: Oct 7

Our  environment is all we have. It is the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the land that feeds us. Yet around the world, environmental crises are deepening. Rising temperatures, polluted rivers, deforestation, and overflowing waste sites threaten the survival of communities, esp1ecially in Nigeria where vulnerable populations bear the heaviest burden.

In the middle of this challenge lies an opportunity. The opportunity is the youth. Their creativity, passion, and energy make them the most powerful actors in shaping a sustainable future. But this potential must be nurtured, guided, and provided with the right resources.

At the New Beginnings Youth Foundation (NBYF) Treatment Centre, we enlighten  young people with the awareness and skills to be guardians of the environment. By engaging the Nigerian youth in sustainability initiatives, we empower them to protect their communities while building personal resilience and leadership.

Why Youth Engagement in Sustainability Matters

According to African Union, Youth represent more than half of the global population under the age of 30, and in Africa, 70 percent of people are below 30 years old . These numbers show that the future of our planet rests heavily on the shoulders of young people. If they are excluded from environmental action, the fight against climate change and resource depletion will be lost.

The United Nations has also noted that involving youth in environmental governance promotes innovation and increases long-term community resilience. Young people are often the first to embrace new technologies, advocate for climate-friendly practices, and organize movements that push governments to act.

Yet, many youths in underserved communities lack the platforms to contribute. Limited access to education, green jobs, and environmental programs restricts their involvement. This is where organizations like NBYF bridge the gap.

NBYF’s Approach to Sustainability

At our treatment centre, environmental education is embedded into rehabilitation and empowerment programs. We understand that teaching young people about sustainability goes beyond theory. It requires hands-on involvement in projects that show them the value of caring for their surroundings.

1. Green Roots Initiative

One of our newest programs, the Green Roots Initiative, involves training youth in sustainable farming practices. By cultivating vegetables and crops within our treatment facility, participants learn to grow food organically, recycle waste into compost, and practice water conservation. This project instills responsibility and a sense of contribution.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, sustainable agriculture is one of the most effective ways to combat hunger while protecting natural resources. When youth engage in such farming, they gain practical skills that can serve as lifelong livelihoods while also contributing to community food security.

2. Recycling and Waste Management

Plastic pollution is a growing threat, with Nigeria generating over 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, of which only about 12 percent is recycled (World Bank, 2022). At NBYF, we encourage youth to engage in creative recycling projects. These activities spark creativity while instilling eco-friendly habits.

3. Environmental Clubs and Community Outreach

We also encourage our youths to form environmental clubs that extend beyond the centre. Through clean-up campaigns, tree planting, and awareness drives, they become ambassadors of sustainability in their communities. This peer-to-peer influence is powerful. A young person planting a tree or teaching neighbors about waste sorting does more than spread awareness, it builds a culture of accountability.

Youth as Change Makers

There is something powerful about watching a young person transform from hopelessness to responsibility. A boy who once struggled with addiction now leads a team that manages the centre’s waste recycling. Another once neglected now organizes tree-planting drives in her community. These stories show us that when youth are trusted with responsibility, they do not just rise to the occasion, they inspire others.

The African Youth Charter emphasizes that empowering youth to participate in environmental action strengthens social cohesion and creates sustainable solutions. At NBYF, every program is designed with this in mind. We believe that when our clients step back into society, they should not just be rehabilitated individuals but active leaders in creating greener and healthier communities.

Environmental sustainability is not a distant concern. It is about whether children will have safe water to drink in the next decade. It is about whether families will have fertile land to farm. It is about whether cities will be livable or drowned in pollution. Youth engagement in these issues is not optional, it is essential.

How You Can Help

At the NBYF Treatment Centre, we have seen what happens when youth are given these opportunities. They rise. They lead. They protect. But to continue this work, we need partners.

Here are ways you can support:

  • Donate to expand programs like the Green Roots Initiative.

  • Sponsor farming tools, seedlings, and eco-friendly kits for our youths.

  • Volunteer expertise in sustainable agriculture, environmental education, or green entrepreneurship.

  • Partner with us to extend outreach into more underserved communities.

Every tree planted, every recycled item, every empowered youth brings us closer to a sustainable future.

The story of sustainability is also the story of youth. If we fail to engage them, we fail the planet. But if we empower them, the future becomes brighter, greener, and more hopeful.

At NBYF, we are planting seeds in the hearts of young people. Seeds of responsibility, courage, and leadership. With your support, these seeds will grow into forests of change.

The environment does not need saving tomorrow. It needs saving today. And the youth are ready to lead the charge. The only question is, will you stand with them?

Support NBYF today, to stand with the youth in promoting environmental sustainability

Our purpose at New Beginnings Youth Foundation is to prepare our youth for their futures.  By providing resources in education, we believe the youth will possess the means to further educate themselves onto becoming the doctors, lawyers, engineers, and architects of future generations.
