Walk into any cybercafé in a Nigerian town and you will see it. A group of young people huddled around a single computer, trying to make sense of a world that moves faster than their own. For many, that glowing screen is their only window to the digital age. While the rest of the world races toward artificial intelligence, blockchain, and advanced coding, millions of youths in underserved communities are left struggling with the basics.
This is not just about technology. It is about survival, opportunity, and dignity. Digital skills are no longer luxuries. They are the currency of the modern economy, the passport to employment, and the foundation for leadership in the 21st century. Yet, for so many young Nigerians, access to this passport is denied.
Our Youths are Still Technologically Behind
Imagine a brilliant young girl in a rural community. She has the same curiosity and determination as her peers in the city, but she has no laptop, no reliable internet, and no one to guide her. She dreams of building a mobile app to help farmers in her village, but the digital divide stands as an invisible wall, holding her back.
According to UNICEF, only about 33 percent of young people in sub-Saharan Africa have access to the internet. This statistic is not just a number, it represents millions of bright minds cut off from global conversations, from opportunities to learn, and from platforms where they can express their creativity.
Digital skills are not simply about learning how to type or browse the internet. They are about unlocking potential. With access to technology, a young person can learn graphic design, digital marketing, programming, or even start an online business. These are tools that break cycles of poverty, empower communities, and give youths a voice in a noisy world.
At the NBYF Treatment Centre in Alabata, we have seen firsthand how digital literacy transforms lives. Many of the youths who come to us for rehabilitation are not only healing from trauma, they are also searching for purpose. When given the chance to learn basic digital skills, something changes in their eyes. Hope returns. The idea that they can contribute to society, that they can be part of something larger than themselves, begins to grow.
Technology as a Path to Healing
For young people struggling with mental health challenges or recovery, technology can be more than a skill set. It can be therapy. Simple creative tools like digital storytelling, online art platforms, or even coding exercises help them focus their energy on building rather than breaking. They move from feeling forgotten to feeling empowered.
Access to digital resources also helps families. Parents can learn to support their children through online parenting guides. Communities can connect to government programs. Leaders can track social development projects more effectively. In this way, the ripple effect of digital access goes far beyond the individual.
Bringing technology to these youths is such a daunting task. Power supply is unstable in many underserved areas. Internet data is expensive. Laptops and devices are still out of reach for countless families. But these barriers should not be accepted as permanent. Every effort to provide access counts. A donated laptop, a community learning hub, a youth mentorship program, or even a single smartphone can change a life trajectory..
Support Our Movement
The NBYF Treatment Centre is committed to bridging this technological gap. Beyond therapy, we integrate vocational and digital skills into our rehabilitation process. We believe that healing must go hand in hand with empowerment. A youth who learns digital skills is not only less likely to fall back into destructive patterns, but is also more likely to lead in their community
This is not only the responsibility of organizations or government. It belongs to all of us. If you are reading this article, you already stand on the privileged side of the digital divide. The question is simple. Will you help bring others across?
Your donation to NBYF is not just funding. It is a lifeline. It is a laptop in the hands of a curious boy. It is internet access for a girl who dreams of becoming an engineer. It is the hope that someone, somewhere, believes that underserved communities deserve to shine too.
According to the World Bank, every ten percent increase in internet penetration can increase GDP growth by up to 1.38 percent in developing countries. This is not charity. This is investment in the future of Nigeria. When we invest in digital access for youths, we are investing in the nation’s stability, its creativity, and its leadership on the global stage.
ConclusionÂ
Technology has the power to level the playing field. It can give a child in Alabata the same chance as a child in New York. It can make the difference between wasted potential and unleashed brilliance. At NBYF, we believe no youth should be left behind, no matter where they come from.
The time to act is now. The screen that glows in one community must glow in all. And with your support, we can make sure that every young person, even in the most underserved corners, has a chance to rise.
Somewhere in the NBYF Centre today, a young boy is learning to use a computer today all because of your support. Many more of these youths will get more access to technology when you support our movement.Â
Kindly donate a token, support our cause or share our story and be the reason a young person levels up technologically today.Â
