Vocational Training at NBYF; Preparing Nigerian Youths for a Brighter Future

In a world where opportunities often feel like a luxury reserved for a few, the New Beginnings Youth Foundation (NBYF) is rewriting that narrative—one skill at a time. Many of the 10 million children living on the streets in Nigeria are exposed to exploitation, abuse, and have limited access to education and vocational skills. However, with the transformative power of vocational training, we are taking a significant step towards reducing the growing population of at-risk youths, inspiring hope and a brighter future.

International Labour Organization (ILO) estimated that  10.5 million children are out of school in Nigeria, the highest number in the world.”. These are not just children with broken pasts or a faulted academic upbringing. They’re young minds with untapped potential. And with the right tools, they can build futures far brighter than their beginnings.

Right in the heart of Alabata, Moniya Ibadan, is a haven where vulnerable and at-risk youth don’t just find shelter, they find purpose. At NBYF’s Treatment Centre, vocational training is a part of our treatment model and aftercare programs. It's more than a program; it’s a lifeline. It's a bridge between trauma and transformation, helplessness and independence. At NBYF, we believe that every young person deserves the chance to learn, grow, and thrive. Our vocational training programs are tailored to meet this belief with action. From fashion design and media graphics to cosmetology, barbing, fine arts, and culture, our youths are exposed to real-world skills that prepare them for real-world jobs. These aren’t just hobbies—they are trades that foster independence, confidence, and long-term sustainability.

Imagine a 14-year-old girl who once wandered the streets without a sense of direction now creating beautiful garments that command respect. Or a teenage boy who used to be known only for trouble is now thriving in a graphics design class, building logos and digital artwork that reflect the power of a healed mind. These are not just hypothetical scenarios but real success stories from our vocational training program at NBYF.

That’s what vocational training at NBYF does—it restores dignity and rewrites destinies. Moreover, Youth unemployment in Nigeria was recorded at 19.6% in 2023, making skill-based training a critical tool in reversing poverty and unemployment. Vocational training is not only a poverty alleviation scheme or a job opportunity. It is a recipe for transformation.

Vocational Training for Transformation

Our vocational programs are not one-size-fits-all. We design our training to cater to the interests and talents of each youth. Our facility offers hands-on training in a structured, therapeutic environment where youths can learn at their own pace while receiving the psychosocial and emotional support they need.

These trainings are guided by skilled instructors and volunteers, many of whom are professionals in their fields. Our curriculum doesn’t just teach skills—it instills discipline, focus, creativity, and the value of hard work.

But it doesn’t end there.

We also offer mentorship and guidance to help our youths transition from learning to earning. We prepare them for internships, entrepreneurial opportunities, and reintegration into the workforce. This is not charity—it is empowerment.

Why You Should Support Us

Every year, thousands of vulnerable youths are released from residential treatment with no support system to help them navigate life beyond the facility. Research shows that without proper aftercare, 70% of youth relapse into high-risk behavior within six months of leaving residential care. At New Beginnings Youth Foundation (NBYF), we are rewriting that statistic by creating a structured and compassionate aftercare program, such as vocational training, tailored to each child’s recovery journey.

NBYF’s vocational training programs are not a luxury—they are a necessity. When you give a child a skill, you provide them with an identity that goes beyond their trauma. You give them hope that no longer hinges on handouts but on the strength of their own hands.

This is our mission. And this is where you come in.

Help Us Walk This Journey With Them

Children sit at blue chairs, writing on papers. A banner reads "CHARACTER COUNTS!" Adults watch in a classroom setting.

To keep these life-changing programs running, we rely on generous hearts like yours. Every sewing machine, every pair of scissors, every computer, every textbook—and every instructor’s time—is made possible by donations and support from people who believe in the power of change.

Will you help us train the next generation of barbers, designers, artists, and entrepreneurs?

Here’s how you can support:

Donate Today: Your financial support fuels our training programs, provides materials, and covers instructor fees. We ensure that every penny you donate is used efficiently and effectively to support our vocational training initiatives.

Sponsor a Skill Track: Choose a program—fashion design, media, or cosmetology—and sponsor a child’s complete training journey.

Volunteer Your Time or Expertise: If you’re a skilled professional, you can mentor, teach, or guide these youths.

Provide Materials or Equipment: Have tools, textbooks, or equipment to donate? They go directly into our classrooms—and into capable hands.

When you support NBYF, you’re not just giving—you are an integral part of the success stories of many at-risk youths. Your contribution is what makes these stories possible, and your belief in their potential is what fuels our mission.

Vocational training is not just about employment; it’s about empowerment. It’s about equipping vulnerable youth with the ability to break cycles of poverty, reclaim their lives, and write their own success stories. The situation is urgent, and your support is crucial in helping these youths take control of their futures.

Be part of that story. Be the reason someone dares to dream again!
