Empowering Youths Through Innovative Programs and Services

Nigeria's youth population, comprising over 70% of the nation's demographics, presents both a significant asset and a pressing challenge. The country is at a critical juncture: it must either harness the potential of its young people or face a future plagued by unemployment, social unrest, and unfulfilled aspirations.  The New Beginnings Youth Foundation (NBYF) is steadfast in its commitment to the former, channeling its resources and expertise to empower at-risk and vulnerable youth through innovative programs and services.

Nigeria is grappling with a multitude of challenges concerning its youth.  The National Bureau of Statistics reported an 8.6% unemployment rate among youth aged 15-24 in the third quarter of 2023, a significant increase from 7.2% in the previous quarter.  This alarming statistic underscores the pressing need for targeted interventions to combat youth unemployment. Additionally, UNICEF estimates that approximately 10.5 million Nigerian children aged 5-14 are not in school despite primary education being officially free and compulsory.  This educational gap limits future employment opportunities and perpetuates cycles of poverty and marginalization.

Recognizing these challenges, NBYF has developed a comprehensive suite of programs designed to address the multifaceted needs of Nigerian youth. These programs leave no stone unturned, ensuring that every aspect of a young person's life is catered to, from education to mental health to vocational training.

1. Preventive Programs

NBYF's preventive programs are curriculum-based initiatives aimed at equipping at-risk youth with essential life skills.  These programs focus on teaching social and behavioral skills, enabling youth to face life's challenges and deviate from disruptive behaviors.  The life-skills training program, for instance, empowers youth to make informed decisions, communicate effectively, and build healthy relationships.  Additionally, the psycho-social support treatment / program helps vulnerable youth recover from physical, mental, and social crises by strengthening their social bonds and facilitating resilience.  NBYF also conducts mental health awareness outreach, outpatient counseling, and psycho-educational groups to educate at-risk youth, parents, and communities about mental health, reducing stigma and promoting well-being.

2. Residential Treatment Programs

For youth aged 8 to 18 who have experienced profound negative consequences from life's challenges, NBYF offers intensive treatment services at its center in Alabata, Moniya, Ibadan, Oyo State.  This holistic approach includes providing basic needs such as shelter, food, clothing, medical and dental care, and psychosocial support.  The center employs evidence-based practices, including substance abuse and mental health treatment, psychotherapy, and psychological evaluations.  Education services are also integral, with year-round transportation to local community schools, life skills training, and vocational training.  Family engagement is encouraged through family therapy and on-site parenting education.

3. Vocational Training

Vocational and entrepreneurship programs focus on securing employment and establishing entrepreneurial opportunities with mentorship support.  The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Q2 2020 report highlights that Nigeria’s youth unemployment rate stood at 34.9%, while youth underemployment was 28.2%. This means that over 63% of Nigerian youths were either unemployed or underemployed during that period. Hence, the NBYF treatment center provides a good environment for youth aged 8 to 17 to engage in educational and skills-based recreational activities.  These activities include Fashion and Graphic design, Cosmetology, and many more.

4. Community-Based Programs

NBYF's community-based programs are a testament to the power of collective action. These programs strive to engage and empower community members by providing tools, resources, and support to address specific challenges and improve quality of life.  Services include monthly youth outreach programs, psychosocial support, mental health awareness, substance abuse education, and life and interpersonal skills training.  These programs aim to stop the cycle of vulnerable children being subjected to exploitation, abuse, and criminal activity.

The challenges facing Nigerian youth are immense, but with concerted effort and support, transformation is possible.  NBYF invites individuals, organizations, and stakeholders to join in this mission to empower and uplift the nation's youth.
